Since I was but a wee lad during that time, I’ve been wondering why the US allowed a communist regime to embed itself on an island so close to the US.

I’ve been wondering why the US allowed a communist regime to embed itself on an island so close to the US.

The commies won the fight for Cuba on January 1, 1959. They styled themselves ‘freedom fighters’ against a corrupt Juan Baptista. Naturally they were praised by the left in the U.S. Only after they won did they declare their Communist leanings.

By this time the Eisenhower administration was in its last months in office and was dealing both with this and the U-2 incident over the USSR. Once again the left in this country was happy to see the US embarrassed.

JFK was sworn in in January of 1961 and I believe approved the attack on Castro but then basically pulled back leading to the Bay of Pigs fiasco. A couple of years later we had the Cuban Missile Crisis where JFK promised Khrushchev that we’d let Castro stay in return for USSR withdrawing its missiles.
