“Well, is it OK for candidates to talk about limiting abortions after six weeks?”
Yes.
By 6-8 weeks, a heartbeat can first be detected and a pregnant woman can see the baby via ultrasound. The introduction of the ultrasound in the 1970’s has had a profound impact on public attitudes toward abortion - such that the vast majority views pre 6 week abortions completely differently than post 6 week abortions.
There is a widespread belief that before 6 weeks there is not a baby yet - but rather biological tissue, and thus, that getting an abortion during this period is a form birth control rather than euthanasia.
I think this is both absurd and tragic - but it is nevertheless what the vast majority believes.
Because of that widespread belief, it is virtually impossible for a candidate advocating a ban on abortions earlier than 6 weeks to get elected. Such a candidate is accused of banning birth control. Advocating a ban after 6 weeks is seen by most as reasonable - at least in red states.
I will repeat: not a single unborn baby is saved from abortion by losing elections.
Well, you have thought out your argument. Thanks for sharing it.
