Well, Russia started a war on their border. Blow back was going to happen.
Same with nuclear war. Once the rest of Europe and the US decided to not let Ukraine go it alone, Russia was going to go nuclear.
But the calculation was Russia will not stop until they get the old borders back. The EU was not going to allow that to happen.

In all of the wars we’ve thrown over the years, how long would we tolerate Russia supplying, targeting, and directing missile attacks inside the continental United States, striking strategic air bases, radars to detect ICBMs, hitting our oil refineries etc?

The Biden administration has greenlit the use of American long-range strike systems by Ukraine to launch attacks deep into Russia Biden admin has ONLY allowed Ukraine to use Patriot system to defend its city Kharkiv from Russian glide bombs that are hitting civilian targets.
US officials tell CNN it’s just a "partial lift of the ban" as it only applies to Kharkiv
- Patriot can strike RU planes in the air
- ATACMS not allowed
- Strikes on parked planes not allowed
At least 16 killed in Russian strike on hardware store in Kharkiv-May 25, 2024

President Biden has knowingly or unwittingly brought the risk of a world-ending nuclear conflict In his case, it's both!
Putin is likely going to use one tactical nuke as a display of force - and final warning. I've long predicted he would put that on record before doing it, and he did it! What the morons leading us will do in response is a wild card.

Russia should fear it.
The maniac Putin is destroying his own country over Ukraine.
I don’t usually predict, but I’ll lay odds that before Russia gets into a disastrous war with NATO, Putin will be killed.

The response will be to devastate Russian forces in Ukraine. For starters.

In the last century or this one, have we ever invaded an adjacent country with the intent to annex it?
To: Chad C. Mulligan
No, we just invaded Ukraine and annexed it. Then we set up shop there.
