I make that mistake a lot. Dunno why. I know the difference. One is a contraction and one is possessive. But often the ‘s is used in the possessive sense. So for some silly reason I’ve been making that mistake ever since grammar school. I catch myself more often than not but sometimes it still slips through even to this day.
And sometimes it’s the auto-correct.

Yes, I cringe every time I see it's for its. Its is a possessive pronoun; the possessive aspect is built-in. Yours, mine, ours, his, hers, its. No apostrophe needed. Besides, we need all those extra apostrophes to form plural's.

I finally figured out a way to remember.
The contraction is actually leaving out a letter. To me, that’s a more radical action than the possessive. Thus it NEEDS the ‘ to replace the missing letter.
