In new TV ad, Maryland's Larry Hogan charts potential Senate path forward as centrist

Republican Senate candidate Larry Hogan is warning Republicans in Washington, D.C., that he won't be a reliable vote if Maryland chooses to send him to the Capitol.

In a new TV ad aired Tuesday, the former Maryland governor stressed his bipartisan bona fides. "In the Senate, Republicans can't count on my vote. But then again, neither can Democrats," he said.

"If they want my vote, they will have to do what is right for Maryland, not one political party," Hogan continued in the video, first reported by Punchbowl News. "That's exactly what I did as your governor, and exactly the kind of senator I'll be."

The latest ad comes as Democrats, who are fighting an uphill battle to hold onto the Senate majority despite an unfavorable election map, have taken aim at the Maryland Republican, painting him as a lackey of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and a dependable GOP vote.

Isn't he super independent? Quite a dilemma, IMO - blue state, race to replace blue senator with a total RINO?

Hogan is too irritating, on second thought.

This is as good as its going to get in Maryland. I, for one, am glad he ran.

$10. He’ll get that from me. Hell-if he’s close in Sept. I might even think of sending in another 40. Doesn’t mean we have to like him. We’re still paying for the 600 votes Kelly Ayotte came up short in ‘16. NH.

Only Paul Ryan at Faux believes this.

Agreed. A GOP win in Maryland is a huge win, no matter how liberal the candidate. He will caucus with the GOP and will be a reliable vote to confirm judges.

Would any here seriously prefer another Chris Van Hollen or worse Barbara Mikulski? H

Many precincts in Maryland don’t want a centrist. They want a liberal.

There was a recent thread here on Free Republic, in which a few Freepers expressed disgust at Larry Hogan. One Freeper openly said he or she would vote Democrat instead. Another said he or she would simply not vote.

I know it’s a common view on Free Republic that most Republicans are too liberal for us.

I have no say not being a Maryland voter. But if these are the choices, a liberal Democrat idiot, or a Republican who isn’t a strong conservative, all of us have to decide how to vote.

Romney, as bad as he is, would actually be a substantial improvement over anything that Massachusetts could reasonably elect. Thus it is with Larry Hogan.

Even though Hogan is just a fat RINO he would give the Senate GOP another senate seat, on the other hand he is 9 point behind Alsobrooks the dimwit candidate for Senate I don't think Hogan has a chance of taking that seat.

RINOs like Romney and Hogan will stab MAGA in the back at crucial moments. Be prepared to be disappointed.

He will make you hate him—when you least expect it.

Because—he hates you.

I may vote NeverHogan, certainly wont vote for him.

Who’s more slimey? The pro-abortionist or the lying pro-abortionist republican? The latter is twice evil.

Yep. Think we’d all like to have a true MAGA person running.

But, could a real MAGA candidate have a chance in Maryland anyway?

Having a majority in the Senate is important. RINOs like Romney, Murkowski, Collins kept Merrick Garland off the Supreme Court. It’s not ideal, but does anyone think having Garland with a lifetime appointment to the SCOTUS is a good idea?

A loss in the Maryland Senate race is mitigated by ending Larry Hogan’s career. I suppose winning the seat with Hogan would be better but IMO only marginally. I’ll shed no tears at his loss.

Hogan will do more to keep MAGA from taking over the GOP, than any Democrat.

Count on it for sure. That’s who they are . . . but they will at least vote to confirm judicial nominees. Even Arlen Specter deserves credit for his key role in getting Judge Clarence Thomas through a very nasty judicial confirmation process.
