I was taught like you were.
E.g., as a medical student on pediatrics, I overruled, during the night, the professor's dangerously inaccurate diagnosis on a 6-year-old boy, made during evening rounds, and proved that the child had acute glomerulonephritis, and, upon discovering my diagnosis the next morning, the professor was delighted. He bragged about his medical student's outhinking him. There were "visiting firemen" from other medical schools. He bragged to them.
