Sturgeon mayor resigns, board of Alderman member to perform duties of mayor

STURGEON, Mo. (KMIZ)

The City of Sturgeon's mayor resigned Saturday, according to a social media post from the city.

The city stated in the post that it received notice from Kevin Abrahamson that he has resigned his position as Mayor and resigned from the City Council, effective immediately. Aldermen Seth Truesdell will be taking over as Mayor Pro-Tem until the vacancy is filled, the post states.

The resignation comes after the city received backlash after a blind-and-deaf dog was shot and killed by a Sturgeon police officer last Sunday. In a social media post, the city claimed the officer saw the dog “behaving strangely and displaying signs of possible injuries” that was “perceived to be rabid behavior.”

In a separate post, the city said that “the city has reviewed the dispatch report and body camera footage regarding the recent dog at large incident," the post reads. "The City believes that the officer acted within his authority based on the information available to him at the time to protect against possible injury to citizens from what appeared to be an injured, sick, and abandoned dog.”

Bodycam footage shows the interaction a Sturgeon police officer had with a 13-pound, blind-and-deaf Shih Tzu before he shot the dog to death. ABC 17 News spoke with the owner of the dog, Nicholas Hunter previously who said he plans to take legal action against the city.

In a statement sent to ABC 17 News via email, Truesdell stated he was informed Friday evening that Abrahamson resigned

Truesdell also state the board had not seen the body camera footage until after it went public. He also said the board does not agree with statements made by Abrahamson, or the actions of the officer involved.

"The actions of the officer involved are not the values and beliefs of the residents of Sturgeon or the board of Alderman,"the statement reads. "Currently, I have made calls to the Boone County Sheriff to meet and discuss an investigation. The officer involved was placed on leave and will remain on leave until further notice. The board of Alderman will be holding a future special meeting to discuss personnel, including Officer Woodson. I personally give my condolences to the owners of Teddy."

Check back for updates to this developing story. ABC 17 News reached out Abrahamson for comment.

Abrahamson and Woodson should both commit seppuku.

Amen. Either the cop was a bloodthirsty thug who was looking for something to kill, or he’s an addle-pated nitwit scared of a cute little dog.

Either way, there’s no way he should be a cop!

The killer cop should have been drug tested. Actually, there is still time to test him. A lot of illegal drugs don't clear the system in a speedy manner.

Story hits home with me. I have an old gentle blind little dog here. She weighs 15 pounds. If anyone shot her, he would have more than hell to pay.

The article is not clear. But it seems like the mayor thought that killing the little blind dog was an okay thing to do. Perhaps all the backlash is what forced his resignation.

Side note to the mayor: Do not call that cop if there’s a problem at your house. He’s liable to shoot your dog, your cat, your parakeet… and maybe you too.

I would fully expect for a person to open fire on me if I shot his/her 15 pound dog, blind or not! Where was this guy’s head? I think I know. And, I’m sure he was a democrat because FEW democrats know the real purpose of a gun.

#4: "But it seems like the mayor thought that killing the little blind dog was an okay thing to do."

Another article quotes the mayor as saying it was totally justified. Shocking. Evidently the rest of the town council does not feel that way. The Abrahamson (the ex-mayor) and killer cop Woodson should both rot in hell.

There is something about a cop that enjoys killing dogs.

Did the cop take three days off to settle down his adrenaline and make his report?

Torturing or killing an animal for no good reason is a sign of a psychopath. I wish I could say that this cop was just one in a million - and no other cop in America would behave that way.

Unfortunately, I can’t say that.

Side note: I’ll bet you a dollar that this trash cop will resign or be fired. Then he will be quietly hired by some other department down the road. Anyone who doubts that need only look up the term “gypsy cop”.

There is a good possibility, eventually, they enjoy killing people.

I checked some of the comments. This outrage has united liberals and conservatives. That would seem to be an impossibility.

Yet this trash cop has managed to do just that.

I am very concerned about policing going forward. I still want to believe that good cops are in the majority. But the bad ones - the garbage ones - are causing conservatives to move away from supporting the police.

No good can come of that.

No surprise here, considering the same officer called me at home two Sundays ago threatening to press charges against me for throwing trash in a local dumpster. When I informed him it was my law office trash and I have been in that location for over eight years now, the conversation ended quickly. He’s always in our neighborhood pulling people over for doing two over, etc. My guess is he won’t be bothering us much longer.

He actually works (well, now apparently “eorked”) for a department down the road. Sturgeon used him as a contract employee when he wasn’t working for his primary department. Not sure if he’ll be there much longer, either.
