This is a huge problem & those in the industry know it, yet they continue onward & upward because of government demand. It would seem that the lack of public demand for the EVs in any configuration should be the best answer to this problem. Now if we had someone in charge who would listen....

Incorrect.

When a cargo ship full of burning EVs sinks, do you think those cars are still burning as they sit on the floor of the ocean? The water puts them out (eventually) because a lithium battery fire is a "thermal runaway," meaning the battery has a short-circuit that's creating temperatures in excess of the auto-ignition temperature of the battery's storage materials. Which melts the barriers separating in uninvolved battery cells, which causes the short-circuiting to spread. What puts it out is cooling the battery to below that auto-ignition temperature, and water will get there, ... in time.

Tesla's own firefighting guide reads (and this is a cut-and-paste):

USE WATER TO FIGHT A HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY FIRE. If the battery catches fire, is exposed to high heat, or is generating heat or gases, use large amounts of water to cool the battery. It can take approximately 3,000 gallons of water, applied directly to the battery, to fully extinguish and cool down a battery fire; always establish or request an additional water supply.

Apparently Tesla is unaware they don't know how to fight lithium battery fires.

It doesn't have to be water, it could be beer. Anything that will cool the battery. Liquid nitrogen would do the job in much less time, but a dumpster full of water is a lot cheaper and easier to come by.

And sand is an imperfect solution because Li-Ion batteries burn hot enough to melt the sand. So if you don't put in enough sand on the first dump, the fire can melt the first load and form a glazed barrier to subsequent loads.

And before the usual suspects show up with their regular song and dance, there is NO ELEMENTAL LITHIUM in lithium-ion batteries, so water more quenches the fire than exacerbates it.

But get this bit...

This is important, because without the BESS facilities, the county could have a difficult time meeting its climate goals...

Interesting priorities the so-called public servants have there, eh?
