Trump needs to come forward and say he is going to tax these endowments.
That would be a wonderful position for him to take. It would hit them right in the bread basket, and it would be wildly popular with normal Americans who probably do not understand why Harvard gets to sit on fifty billion dollar endowment tax free.
I’d like to require those universities provide student loans out of the endowments.
AND I’d like to see the ability for students to discharge those loans via bankruptcy.
If universities graduate students with low income potential degrees (worthless basket weaving etc) then those universities should expect not to get repaid.
Eventually after massive student loan losses those universities will prune the degrees that are doing nothing but causing social problems.
Basically I’d weaponize student sloth and greed and turn their eyes towards the universities that didn’t provide them with enough incentive for a productive education.
It would also curtail (some) of those universities social/political ambitions by redirecting their massive funds.
Good idea, a 5% annual tax on all endowments could probably reduce the National debt by a goodly chunk.
