I’m no fan of the concept, but I’ve said for years that when Robots and computers can replace all jobs. And by “all”, I mean “all”, the only way most people can survive will be through a stipend. It’s either that or civilization collapses.
However, that won’t work because we already have something like it called welfare and its cousins. That may keep the poor alive, but their quality of life SUCKS. Human beings have three innate desires.
1. Food, water and air
2. Sex
3, Feel useful.
This would destroy number 3. That is where unrest, revolutions, etc. come from. Frankly, I think we’re already seeing it.
There will always be a need to fix new technology, update it, repackage it, sell it, and then all the new technology it generates will need the same.
The problem with an unearned basic income is that all prices will rise because people spend easy money in stupid ways, on chips and soft drinks, etc. When people aren’t frugal vendors increase prices as high as people will tolerate, and people tolerate a lot when they are spending other people’s money.
Someone has to put value in the money by working for it.
Jobs AI won’t be doing: bathing the elderly in nursing homes, tending to the handicapped, cleaning up after dogs and cats....room as are neat but not that good.
There will be new kinds of work but what they will be isn’t known yet.
Agree with you on number 3... that is also when the powerful get bad ideas about what to do with all the unwanted people.
