Local nonprofit Black Surf Santa Cruz is preparing for its Liberation Paddle Out on June 22 at Cowell Beach from noon to 5 p.m. in conjunction with the city of Santa Cruz’s Juneteenth festivities. This is the organization’s fourth annual event and its second year as a certified California nonprofit institution. To decrease barriers to participation caused by lack of parking, this year’s paddle out includes free bus shuttle rides to Cowell’s parking lot. The organization will announce details for pick up as the event gets closer.

You see, Black Surf Santa Cruz is not solely a recreation nonprofit aiming to get Black people surfing – though that is one important element – it’s a movement dismantling white supremacy and it’s one worth joining.

Sorry honey but The Beach Boys, Surfaris, Jan and Dean, The Chantays, Ventures, were all white and they at the time were supreme

I never thought a crowded parking lot was a "barrier to participation" to anything. I just parked farther away and walked a bit more.

Are they telling blacks they can get on a bus to remove the "barrier to participation"? I sure hope they don't get the seats in the back of the bus or we'll never hear the end of it. Maybe it would ignite another Summer of Love 2024.

Oh, FFS. Does everything have to be about race? Just go ride the damned waves already. The ocean doesn’t care what color you are.

What barriers are stopping blacks from surfing? So stupid.

I would guess that Juneteenth is now a beer holiday much like May 5th, since Juneteenth is a Texas thing.

Never knew that beach had a name.

However, I feel my mind was mugged reading that idiotic, contrivance of word salad.

I can remember weekends in the 90s where you had to get to Santa Cruz before 9am to get a parking spot that was less than a 30 minute walk to the beach.

One of the reasons a came home from California. The Bay Area could be beautiful, majestic, but I just got tired of doing everything with millions of other people.

We are still on the San Fran Peninsula. It’s amazing...even on the busiest weekends, I can drive a couple miles into the mountains to the west and have complete solitude. I do pass more people on the trails than during the winter, but it’s not bad. We don’t do fairs, festivals, or events much any more, so it’s not a problem.

We drove over to Concord yesterday for Mother’s Day Brunch with our daughter and boyfriend. On the way home, I-680 was gridlocked for maybe 30 miles, but it was on the other side of the freeway. Our southbound side was pretty clear sailing.

We bought a summer home in North Idaho, but my wife moved there permanently after COVID. She’s visiting our SF Bay Area house for a week to attend to some personal business, but she’s skedaddling back to beautiful Idaho tomorrow morning. She’s a native from Castro Valley; I got here after graduating from college in ‘73.

So, how many shootings can we expect at this Juneteenth beach event?

I lived in Mountain View and Sunnyvale for 14 years, but left in 2000 when I felt the the area between Palo Alto and Santa Clara changing for the worse.

My friends and I used to hike in Redwoods State Park, The Pinnacles, and thought nothing of driving to Monterey for Sunday dinner.

A few people here on FR have told me that Monterey still largely retains it’s old character, just more crowded.

Of course. I forgot my white privilege got me primo parking spots right at the beach. Parking is racist.

But the “GREAT WHITE SHARKS” do, they prefer to dine on seals.
What color are seas, BLACK!

The headline will read:

GREAT WHITES KILL AND DEVOUR BLACKS AT BEACH IN SANTA CRUZ!!!!
