The practice of the Faith for tens of millions of Catholics around the world actually has no connection with his “leadership”.

The Church has been through difficult times in the past and survived despite misguided figure heads. As Christ taught, the Church consist of God’s followers who believe and gather as one in Christ’s name to worship the Divine Holy Trinity. Such faith requires no accoutrements for its survival.

It is entirely acceptable to be a “practicing Catholic” while ignoring or criticizing such statements from the Pope. They are essentially his personal opinions and carry no more weight than anyone else’s. The media makes a big deal because he is a public figure and they like to use him when it suits their purposes.
