The US Federal government under the Lincoln administration instigated a war for money and empire it thought would be easy and it turned into a bloodbath.

Of course it would have. Slavery went extinct everywhere in the entire Western world and that happened for a reason. It no longer worked economically with the onset of industrialization. The South was no more immune to the laws of economics than any other place.
