Joe Biden has sparked a wave of backlash over his comments on the rampant inflation affecting millions of Americans, as he oddly stated: "They have the money to spend."
Within the opening three months of 2024, the American economy registered an annual growth rate of just 1.6% - significantly below the growth witnessed in the preceding quarter. Inflation lingers stubbornly above 3%, well exceeding the Federal Reserve's 2% target.
On Wednesday, during his visit to Wisconsin, President Biden made a rare media appearance with CNN where he tried to hold up his administration's approach to counter rising inflation - a move seen as an effort to tackle plummeting approval ratings.
Addressing concerns about skyrocketing grocery costs, Biden rather startlingly stated that US citizens have more disposable income than realised. He attributed this swelling pressure of inflation directly to "corporate greed".
He asserted: "They have the money to spend. It is real, but the fact is that if you take a look at what people have, they have the money to spend."
"It angers them and it angers me that you have to spend more. For example, the whole idea of this notion that you have... shrinkflation... It's like 20 percent less for the same price, that is corporate greed. It is corporate greed and we've got to deal with it."
Scorn descended swiftly onto Biden from all sides post these remarks, as netizens on X began questioning his awareness of the hardships faced by everyday Americans. One X user commented: "Most people don't have the money because they are honest, unlike pathological lying Joe!"
Another added: "He is the most clueless president this country has ever had and that is the way history will remember him".
"The man is out of touch with EVERYTHING," another user chimed in.
