and so on..
Quite probably, for the first time in their lives, they are being held accountable for their actions and they literally, not figuratively, but literally have no idea how to handle it and makes no sense to them since they’ve never encountered the situation before.
I personally think they ought to get the consequences, good and hard..

That’s exactly the problem. And for those of us who grew up with rules and boundaries set, and punishments assured for violating the rules or stepping outside those set boundaries, it is rather gratifying to see some of them finally learning those badly needed lessons.

Go after the parents. as well. If it’s good enough for a kid misusing a gun, it’s good enough for these punks.
I don’t like the new rules, but those are the rules the left wants to play by.
