Hamas doesn’t really differentiate, other than the occasional claim that x number of ‘women and children” have been killed, between Hamas fighters and civilians.
Do they define “children”? No. And remember, the Iranians were famous for sending waves of child “martyrs” against the Iraqi army in the Iran-Iraq war. While Hamas seems a bit smarter than that, IMO it’s 100% that Hamas would use 15 y/o’s as decoys at the very least, and quite likely as fighters too.
In any event, if we assume Hamas claims of total casualties and Israel’s claims of Hamas taken out are both fairly accurate (or at least both equally generous), the ratio of civilian Gazans to Hamas killed is exceptionally low, especially given the environment.
IMO, perhaps Israel should have stated before they began their invasion, “We know that Hamas intends to make sure 3 or 4 Gazan civilians get killed for every one of their fighters killed. You can do the math. We will do our best to minimize this number, but please do not forget who and what we are up against.”
As the real ratio is under 1.5, then Israel can, when questioned about civilian casualties, refer to that vs. their original statement.
