I’d bet most laptops bought these days for personal use are less than $1000. After 5 years you throw it away rather than pay a few hundred to fix it.

I will disagree.
Car sales are a very small margin to the dealership. They make more for services .
Like a movie theater. They make their money on concessions and not movie tickets.
