Since cops are shunned, spat upon and defunded all over the country, they risk their lives but are afraid of being charged in court and going to prison if they fight back.
In the classic Naked City series there was an episode of the common morons throwing things including heavy objects down from two and three story apartment tenements at the police on patrol and others surrounding police cars. Can’t find the episode #. 1958-1963.
The wimpy American people will have to decide:
Anarchy and out of control privileged mobs and confident criminals run the cities and towns
or
police do law enforcement and someone goads the judicial system into putting the guilty in prison.
Until then, I pray as always for the safety of vigilantes.

I think that was decided in 2020.
OTOH, criminals have to realize that the police exist to protect them from victims and citizens. Once that is turned around we’ll see some real changes.
