The fact that NATO has failed for years to force other NATO countries to provide for their own defense as part of the NATO structure, and still hasn't, makes it a useless, unprepared entity. They are only now talking about forcing member nations to pay their fair share, something Trump told them in 2016.

Germany has consistently, since the 90's failed to invest in their own defense. And why should they have? They had U.S. troops stationed there since the Cold War. There are still approximately 50,000 U.S. service members there. As recent as February 2022, Germany promised to increase their defense spending. They pledged to create a 100 billion euro supplemental defense fund. This increase meant that Germany would finally reach the 2% of GDP defense spending target set by NATO after many years of spending less than 1.5% of GDP on defense. However, in August of 2023, Germany removed that pledge, and said they would now instead reach it over a 5-year period. And what has NATO done about it? Nothing.

How many other NATO members have failed to build up their own defenses as required, and how has NATO handled those? Likely as bad a they have Germany. NATO has relied on the U.S. to keep it afloat. It's time to get rid of this albatross on the back of American taxpayers. Europe needs to protect itself for a change. We are not the policemen of the world. We saved Europe's ass twice. Third time is not the charm. Russian and Ukrainian are their problem, not ours.
