Bringing up Hiroshima and Nagasaki as if they were all that always amuses me. Ole Curt LeMay was doing fine at erasing Japanese cities, and large chunks of their civilian populations, using incendiaries and the B-29 fleet. Tokyo was effectively gone, as were many other cities. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were literally 2nd, if not 3rd, rate targets. That’s all that was left.
They went out in a spectacular way, don’t get me wrong. I get that. But most of the heavy lifting had already been done in taking out Japanese cities and production capacity.
