The 'baffled' excuse has been around so long it occurred to me (after hearing it being used for decades even on tv shows) they (medical industry) learned to use it in a medical rhetoric seminar towards the end of their ojt sessions.

After I looked it up I was convinced it is intended as an unapproachable hidey-hole for the 'experts'.

Oxford American Dictionary. baffle 1. to puzzle, to perplex 2. a screen placed to hinder or control the passage of sound, light or fluid.
