I think it comes down to the definition of insanity...and the word insanity has no single, clear clinical definition.

That's the problem with mental illness. It isn't visible like a broken arm...but it is still quite real.

Nope...can't agree there. The human brain is an organ...just like the heart,liver,kidneys,etc. And like those organs the brain can experience chemical imbalances,structural abnormalities,infections,etc.

There was a time when even the world's top doctors would tell the parents of a schizophrenic that their son is the way he is because at least one of them was a bad parent. But now researchers have found that it's the result of a virus.

What I’m trying to say...badly (as usual)...is that there’s mentally ill/crazy/insane and there’s morally depraved. Joshua is morally depraved. A guy who believes that there are monsters in his bathtub telling him to jump off the George Washington Bridge is mentally ill.

The problem is one of definition. Some people would say that transsexuals are insane, that people like Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy are insane.

A person can be depraved and insane...or not insane, I guess.

I doubt the psychiatric community itself knows how to define insanity nowadays.

For me personally, I would define someone who was compulsively driven to acts of depravity as insane. Even if they had not yet been convicted of a crime, I think they should be removed from society and institutionalized.
