House passes $1.2 trillion spending package hours before shutdown deadline, sending it to Senate

Washington — The House passed a massive spending package on Friday to fully fund the government through September, sending it to the Senate ahead of a midnight deadline to avert a partial shutdown.

The House approved the $1.2 trillion package, which was unveiled early Thursday, in a vote of 286 to 134. The package wraps six spending bills into one to fund about three-quarters of the government until the end of the fiscal year. Another package funding the rest of the government cleared Congress two weeks ago.

A majority of Republicans voted against the measure, with House conservatives objecting to the funding levels in the agreement that House Speaker Mike Johnson reached with Democratic leadership in the Senate. The bill includes money for the departments of State, Homeland Security, Defense, Labor and Health and Human Services, as well as funds for foreign operations, financial services and the legislative branch.

Passage in the House moves Congress one step closer to ending a fight over spending that has persisted six months into the fiscal year, one that has forced lawmakers to repeatedly rely on short-term funding extensions to keep the government operating since October.

Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, waived a self-imposed 72-hour rule that gives lawmakers time to read legislation before a vote in order to get it across the finish line and send it to the Senate, giving the upper chamber just hours before the clock strikes midnight.

Senate rules that allow a single lawmaker to object to expediting a bill's passage could push a vote into Saturday. Republicans are also likely to demand votes on amendments in exchange for speeding up the process, as they did with the last funding bill. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine predicted the upper chamber could hold amendment votes as soon as Friday afternoon.

So we're not going to have floor debate on each appropriations bill like was promised, en?

It depends on what the word 'promised' means. And every other single word out of the miserable sack of crap's mouth.

When’s the last time we had an actual budget where each department of the government had to justify their spending?

These never ending multi-trillion dollar deficits will bring us to financial ruin, sooner rather than later. Where are the adults?!

Politics is a nasty business. I’d rather stand hip deep in sh*t. Remember, everything...and I mean everything Congress does depends on getting the buy in of people you don’t like and would never have over for dinner. Let’s say you stick to your guns and, as a result, you won’t let anything happen. And nothing happening is exactly what would happen. Sounds great, right? You’re moral and ethical, etc. What happens to all the people dependent on business getting done? Elderly people waiting for a lifesaving operation. Thousands upon thousands of employees waiting for that defense contract that keeps them working. What happens to them? Well, they get laid off. They eventually go hungry. To avoid all of the bad things happening to regular people, the good politicians, by that I mean good people, step into the pile of sh*t and shake hands with people they wouldn’t invite to dinner.

My hat’s off. Glad it’s not me. And, by-the-way, if all the “right” things happened the way you or I’d like, with no input from the other side, we’d be in a full civil war. That’s the way the Founders designed it and that’s the only way it will work in the long term. You have to take a little sh*t with the sugar.

Yeah, I realize that. Politics is all about compromise, the language of the devil. That's why I could never be a politician.

It was instructive that Johnson could garner so much support in his vote to secure the Speakership, and Jim Jordan, and much more conservative option, couldn't.

The swamp will only allow want the swamp wants.

In a general way absolutely nothing matters than getting Trump elected. That means no upheaval.

No one is going to swagger about conservative this or that because conservatism is now defined as Drain the Swamp and Build the Wall.

It is on the fringe, pro 2nd amendment and abortion as being settled law, but primarily conservatism is those two items above. Trump redefined conservatism and that is forever.

Obsessing over spending is foolish. Money is created from thin air by the Fed. It cannot be a foundation of morality. How could anything created from nothingness be such at thing.

well, I don’t even want to think about it.

I do, if you know how it ends, you will do Okay. $$$$$$$$$$$$, 1,200,000,000,000- 12 zeros and that is only to September…..throw in the fact we have surpassed $$$$$$$$$$$$ 1 trillion in INTEREST payments alone.

That sum is unpayable, the long talked about “waterfall” event will occur, but when? The Federal Reserve still has tools in their tool box, but it can only delay the inevitable. Prepare accordingly.

Good news, with the current rate of inflation we’re all going to be millionaires soon. We’ll all own $250,000 cars, smoke $75.00 cigars, eat $100.00 hamburgers. We’ll be living the high life...

conservatism is now defined as Drain the Swamp and Build the Wall.

IT is expressed very much in those two issues but there are more.

https://kirkcenter.org/conservatism/ten-conservative-principles/

We need to teach people what conservatism is and unite around those principles.

conservatism is more a philosophy, a way of thinking.

Folks,

takes some time to read and reflect on the 10 Principles of Conservatism and teach others.

“Nothings will change till the money runs out. It has happened in history and will happen again.”

Government running the economy is terrible. But collapse won’t happen for a long, long time. There are lots of reasons. The Western world is in demographic and financial decline. On the Demographic side, entire countries like Italy and Greece are depopulating. Export led economies like South Korea and Germany are in terminal decline. The US on the other hand, is growing. The US has raised interest rates. In much of the world the “interest” rates are negative. You put $100k in the bank and a year later you get $96k back. Any money that is free floating is being moved to the US economy. Hence, our stock market going up while the rest of the world declines. The collapse of China means production is reshoring here. All of these things mean that the US will be just fine. We might not like it, but barring nuclear war or another plague, we’ll survive and so will our corruptocrat economy.

I still think that republicans went the wrong way, when every time the debt went up, they cried wolf that America was over. It’s too much. If they didn’t say it everytime, then now if they said it, they’d be some credibility. As it is, Americans have heard the song and dance too much and don’t believe it.
