“Government Do Something!” is how we got to this point. The USG is way too large and was never intended to have this level of control.

The real issue here is that Apple is no helping the NSA and State Department and people are mad. This is how the USG controls the population now.

As one who said he’d never own an iPhone, after months/years of putting up with crappy Android devices that end up shitting themselves, I relented and went to Apple, which work every time, year after year. So they may have a monopoly on smartphones that actually just work.

Yea, this seems weird to me...

Obviously Apple is the big dog, with 60% market share, but that means 40% of the market is something else (mostly android of course)...

Standard Oil by comparison contolled 90% of the Oil Market when it was busted up

I’m curious what the DOJ thinks Apple has done to stifle competition (not saying they haven’t done anything, all companies try their best to protect their fiefdoms).

Are they just going after cash now or is there someone at Apple who is defying the government narrative about something? Becuase there is no monopoly. Plenty of competition.

A patent provides a legal monopoly over the covered intellectual property for the duration of the patent, these days 20 years from the filing date, formerly 17 years from the issue date.

That’s the law, designed specifically to encourage and reward innovation.

So what’s the connection to the handouts to the illegals?

Apple has kept an illegal monopoly over smartphones in US, Justice Department says in a Google inspired antitrust suit

About the only point the government could argue a monopoly is exclusive contracts with carriers. My last phone company went to Apple only, so when I wanted to replace my Android phone I had to change carrier. The old company has since relented and will sell and connect Android phones again.

I'm an Android cell phone user. Mostly Samsung in recent years. Apple has nothing to do with it. Apple does not have a monopoly. It's just government overreach looking for deep pockets to fund illegal aliens and foreign wars.

I took delivery of my new Galaxy S24 yesterday. I'm hunkered down now in my fighting hole waiting for the Apple Gestapo to show up. So far, nothing.

This problem is nothing a little check to the Biden re-election PACs won't cure...

My technology challenged wife has an Apple. As for myself, I love my Nokia. My wife is leaning towards a Nokia when her Iphone dies.

If Apple (50% of smart phones in the U.S. in 2022) is a “monopoly” in smart phones, then the other 50% (brands that make Android smart phones) of U.S. smart phone sales is just a mirage???

I don’t own an apple because I don’t care for them. I find them confusing. But my complaint with ALL phones is in being forced to utilize theìr stuff. I want to see phones like computers where you can delete what you don’t want including the entire operating system, and put something else.

I hate it that you can’t delete samsung browser or facebook.

Some phones can be rooted, but the new operating system frequently runs into problems with utilizing hardware. Like not being able to text or make phone calls, or hear sound. But not all phones can be rooted. And then, the process is so delicate and persnickity.

It took years for developers to figure out how root a $50 ZTE.

We pay for the hardware, it belongs to us. Like any computer, we should be able to put on and remove any software on our devices.

I have an old laptop...well over 7 years old, that I dumped windows on and replaced it with linux giving that slow beast new pep and new life.

How about hardware drivers? Many won’t release them to linux so that you can operate your computer with something other than windows.

Those are the kinds of issues that need correction.
