Rep. Katie Porter is walking back her bold claims that the California Senate primary election was "rigged" after losing to Dem. congressman Adam Schiff.
She sat down on the Pod Save America podcast Tuesday with former Barack Obama speechwriter Jon Levitt when he mockingly asked how to "stop the steal." In response, Porter offered only regret for her previous statements regarding the election.
"So obviously, I wish I had chosen a different word because what happened with the controversy was it took away from two really important truths,” Porter said.
She continued by praising the state's election workers but upheld that election outcomes are subject to being "manipulated" through last-gasp donations.
“Our California election officials do a terrific job. I have been through competitive, close elections where it has taken days to count, and so I have tremendous respect for them," she said. "Big money does affect our elections. Outcomes are manipulated and distorted when you have people coming in, spending millions and millions of dollars at the last minute and that money is not disclosed until after the election."
Still, the claims represent a soft shift from her initial impressions, which she posted X, formerly Twitter.
"Thank you to everyone who supported our campaign and voted to shake up the status quo in Washington," Porter previously wrote. "Because of you, we had the establishment running scared — withstanding 3 to 1 in TV spending and an onslaught of billionaires spending millions to rig this election."
She then doubled down another written statement released later that day: "'Rigged' means manipulated by dishonest means. A few billionaires spent $10 million+ on attack ads against me, including an ad rated "false" by an independent fact-checker."
