Mayors of DC, Oakland claim comeback amid public backlash from crime surge

Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser and Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao are both defending their cities amid a surge in crime that has caused a backlash with business owners and local residents.

Bowser told Axios in an interview that while Washington "had a tough year last year" in terms of crime, she still urged onlookers not to be harsh on the nation's capital.

"Don't be so down on DC," Bowser told the outlet, despite homicides having jumped up 36% and carjackings having almost doubled last year, "when many other major cities saw declines in violent crime."

Bowser pointed to crime data to support her defense of DC, saying that the "numbers were starting to ‘trend in the right direction,'" as "[t]otal violent crime is down 17% so far this year, and all crime is down 12%, according to police stats."

DC is a crime ridden mess. And the mayor is directly responsible for it.

I miss the simpler DC of my youth when you could reduce the crime rate merely by paying for the mayors lavish trips with mistresses or having someone ‘set [him] up’ in the Vista International Hotel.

Comeback? Ha!

DC has always had its sketchy parts, but I wouldn’t set foot anywhere in that cesspool now.

Too bad - at one time, DC had some good restaurants and fun bars and live music venues, not to mention the top-notch tourist attractions. I’ve taken a few friends there in the past and enjoyed playing tour guide, traipsing around the monuments, memorials and museums.

Those days are in the past now. DC has become too volatile.

Too bad the local DAs won't prosecute many of the crimes that thwart business and run-of-the-mill citizens.

If they did, the mayors wouldn't be eager to 'explain' their success in crime prevention.

Historical note: Oakland was rather high crime even before the great unleashing of the Summer of Floyd.

My dearest friend’s son and his family live in Northern Virginia. He will not go into DC now and works from home. His wife I think has to go in occasionally but mostly works from home.

After the leaders’ insulting police, investigating them, hauling them before hostile review boards, supporting easy bail and reducing police budgets then they expect applause for reducing crime. In sanctuary cities where you can’t ask illegals if they have ID.

Are people really voting for all the imbecile mayors?
I have a very strong feeling there is a whole lotta’ cheating going on at these lower levels of power.
How else to explain Newsom, Bass, Breed, lightfoot, Johnson, Adams, Tao, Bowser, Pugh, DiBlasio?
All incompetents.
