"They were assigned to stand under street corner lights with empty M-16’s and look tough."I was "Regular Army" and I remember taking riot training at Fort Bliss in 1967. We were never deployed so, I don't know if they would have issued ammo or not.. But, the Guard sure got some at Kent State.! That pretty much ended the hippy movement.....I think.

The Kent State shootings really slowed down the campus riots. Real world consequences tend to do that. The first time some semi rolls over a bunch of protestors on the interstate might dampen that level of enthusiasm as well.
I think what ended the hippy movement was over-40's wearing bell bottoms and ponytails. Once mom and dad are doing it, time to find a new way to be different like everybody else your age.
