SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — Although it has no power to make decisions, Shasta County's Elections Commission brought out plenty of opinions this afternoon during the board of supervisors meeting including calls for it to be disbanded.
There was a red color scheme in part of the board chambers this morning.
The people wearing red were there in support of supervisor Mary Rickert who was asked to explain her license plate number of "666", a number considered satanic by some Christians, at the last board meeting by district two candidate Laura Hobbs.
Rickert told the Northstate’s News Mike Mangas she appreciated the support from the community.
"I think there's probably several reasons as to why they're showing support, I do think that the last meeting was a little bit over the top in terms of the accusation about religious viewpoints and so I think that they just wanted to show me that they were concerned about me that they cared about me and they know who I am. They know that I would never partake in anything like that. So, I just want to thank everyone for showing up today in support of me. I really appreciate it."
In the afternoon, no vote was scheduled on the elections commission's recommendations to mandate hand-counted ballots at precincts using paper poll books and vote-by-mail drop boxes, which are violations of state law.
Roughly 11 people spoke out against the recommendations during public comment, with nine in favor.
Regardless, Supervisor Tim Garman said he'd heard enough.
“This whole election commission is a waste of time and I'm going to make a motion we bring back at a future meeting to disband it. We just spend too much money and too much time to hear people talk over and over again," Garman said.
Other community members felt the same way during public comment.
“I believe it is time to disband the elections Commission as a good faith gesture to restore the reputation of Shasta County and the Board of Supervisors," one public comment speaker said.
“The many far-left speakers in this room still are protecting the Dominion Software company that our board heroically voted to remove," another speaker said.
The board voted three to two against disbanding the commission.
One of the commission's members, Dawn Duckett, posted online today that she's resigning from the commission. She also called it a waste of time and asked for it to be disbanded.
