Well as I’ve commented before, devil’s in the details of this proposed legislation which may not even get passed by parliament before an election, and then would face further obstacles in Senate and courts.
I am not getting the impression that “life sentences” would be handed out for the sort of speech being discussed here, it would be a possible sentence for more like incitements to kill Jews (or any identifiable group) and that sort of thing, but as always we remain vigilant and very concerned about details knowing track record and associations of some Liberals (not necessarily all).
You can read this story and think, if I lived in Canada and posted my usual stuff on line there, I would be going to jail for life. I don’t think so, but as I say, vigilance required. Also an election, which may solve the problem too.
This legislation is proposed but not passed into law, and I know for a fact there will be strong opposition to various parts of it coming from both political opponents and legal groups including some of a leftist variety.
Trudeau’s political career is probably nearing its end anyway, this may be a sort of desperation move designed to unite a party that is increasingly fractious. I am 99% certain this would be tossed by the Supreme Court in Canada, based on past decisions; they have tossed much tamer legislation than this over past decades.
Lesson.
The left always starts with the least defendable positions and then moves in.
