NEW YORK — Gov. Kathy Hochul has pulled back the big guns in her subway safety surge, ordering the National Guard not to carry military-grade assault rifles when they check riders’ bags for weapons.
Many of the 750 troops Hochul deployed Wednesday to check riders’ backpacks hauling laptops or school books or bags carrying groceries carried M4 carbines, military assault rifles whose 5.56mm rounds can defeat some body armor.

I guess it will take a little longer to condition NYers. They’ll be pulled back for now but slowly reintroduced.
Some 5.56 rounds, like M855 and the newer one will defeat some III & III+ plates.
I haven't seen any 5.56 rounds that will defeat Level IV plates.
This has to be so demoralizing for the NYPD who aren't allowed to do the simple jobs of profiling and arresting people.
Want to bring crime in NYC down? Simple! Do the exact same thing that Mayor Giuliani did! He had a blueprint for this and it worked! You don't need to bring in the frikkin' National Guard to search the purses of old white ladies.

What if somehow, against the odds, the perp turned out to be a person of color or an undocumented immigrant (aka illegal as Biden told us)?
Then a flower, a gentle phrase and a pamphlet on mindfulness would be all the National Guard could do.
