A French frigate 'destroys' a German sub in Norway's waters in NATO's biggest drills since Cold War

Large NATO drills in the frigid fjords of northern Norway may be just war games meant to hone the fighting skills of the newly expanded 32-nation military alliance. But for troops taking part, they are very real.

This week, crew members aboard the French frigate Normandie, one of France’s most modern warships, were roused from sleep and scrambled to hunt down and kill a submarine that snuck into cold Norwegian waters.

The submarine belongs to Germany, also a NATO member. But for the purpose of the war games dubbed Nordic Response 2024, it was acting as an enemy vessel.

The Normandie crew spotted its periscope poking through the waves and sprang into action.

It’s not dead. It’s just pining for the fjords.

“Propaganda.”

ABSOLUTELY!!!! The only other time I can remember the media playing up war games was when Reagan was president, and that was, of course, to portray him as a ‘Warmonger’.

...actually, I believe that the Soviet Union’s media also made a big deal of their war games, back when they were around.

Oh please. I think the French Frigate should have been named “The Clouseau.”

Quote from the ABC article:
"So the frigate was able to fire a torpedo and destroy the submarine," he added — but not for real, of course.
Reporting what did not happen is the new norm.

The Normandie crew spotted its periscope poking through the waves and sprang into action.

In other words the Submarine captain let the frigate find them.

A modern submarine periscope is never out of the water more than a few seconds. The periscope is also covered with radar absorbing material so it is not likely to show up on radar

This is a propaganda stunt.

You might get lucky and spot a sub with sonar or magnetic anomaly sensors.

You are not going to spot one visually unless the sub wants to be seen.

crew members ... were roused from sleep

I hope the Russians know they need to wake up the enemy before attacking.

I get a feed of war games, exercises and other military news. I guess I have my browser trained to focus on that stuff. It is constant, regular and ongoing.

Its never stopped in decades. That you guys havent seen things like this doesnt mean they havent been going on.

An interesting recent one - The Philippines has finally aquired some serious SAM assets and is trying them out in the annual “Balikatan” joint exercises with the US.

Note: Annual

I leave it to you to figure out the significance of this.

“It is constant, regular and ongoing.”

My comment was to point out how the Neocons use the Western Media to “show their feathers to Putin”, not on the war games themselves (which I do agree with you on), as I don’t follow that closely, other than being unable to remember the media picking up on war games in this way, for decades.

All war games in the West have a predetermined outcome. Just a test of French frigate training. Nothing more.
