I wonder what the diameter of this ten kilometer long fiber opic cable is???

A very good question. One has to wonder at the sheer weight.

You can get single mode optical fiber with a diameter of 8 µm. That’s in the range of a 1:5 or 1:6 scale representation of a human hair.

Aramid fibers are floppy and are easily obtained in 10-20 micron, and relatively cheap.
