It is interesting that those of us who admire President Trump best understand his weaknesses.

He has trouble staying on message.

I used to work on campaigns and that was a big issue with a lot of candidates—they could get easily off topic by questions or topics that distracted or detracted from our message.

It is not that we were trying to keep the candidate from being genuine—we just want them genuinely on their message—strongly and consistently without getting sidetracked.

That is always a problem with debates.

Another comment—I used to be on the debating team in high school and college.

Most candidates—even with all the prep they get—are not very good at it.

A decent college debater could outpoint any of them any day of the week.
