The election is in November and I think the winner gets sworn in on January 2nd or shortly thereafter. Resignation “at the end of this year” I’m not sure what that means. The Gov can appoint someone for a couple of days? It’s weird she didn’t just say she is dropping her re-election campaign. She doesn’t need to resign apx 2 days before she gets replaced but there may be implications about procedural votes etc.

If she's resigning during the intersession recess, there would be no point to appoint a Senator, as the Senate would not be in session.

Oh I didn’t realize she was up this year. Then if her successor has already been elected, I’m not sure it will be filled.

In the case of a vacancy between election day and when the new congress convenes in January, the governor typically appoints the senator elect so the can assume the office a few days earlier and get a leg up in the seniority pecking order.
This is unlikely to happen if Lake pulls off an upset and gets elected.
