Too little, too late - Chicago city officials attempt cost-cutting measures after spending hundreds of millions on migrant care..

In a move aimed at optimizing resources, Chicago authorities have shuttered four temporary migrant shelters, projecting a significant cost saving of $19 million annually. The closures, affecting shelters in North Park, Lakeview, North Lawndale, and Downtown, mark a strategic shift in the city's approach to managing its shelter infrastructure amidst evolving demographic patterns.

According to municipal data, these facilities previously housed approximately 239 individuals, serving as crucial temporary accommodations for migrants in need. However, the specifics regarding the timing and demographic composition at the time of closure remain undisclosed by the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications.

Following the closure, all displaced residents were promptly relocated to alternative shelters, although the exact facilities chosen were not disclosed by the office spokesperson. Notably, families previously accommodated at the North Park Village shelter were transferred to other North Side shelters, ensuring continuity of care and support.

While the possibility of reopening the closed shelters remains uncertain, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized a forward-looking approach during a recent press conference. Highlighting the financial rationale behind the decision, Mayor Johnson underscored the imperative to optimize existing resources, particularly considering the substantial operational costs associated with these facilities.

The estimated $19 million in savings encompasses various expenditure components, including lease costs, staffing, and provision of essential services such as food and laundry. Detailed breakdowns provided by the Office of Emergency Management and Communications shed light on the significant operational expenses incurred at each shelter, further justifying the closure decision.

For instance, data reveals that housing migrants at New Life Community Church incurred weekly costs of $2,667, while utilizing Casa de la Esperanza entailed setup fees of $16,000 in addition to utility and janitorial expenses. Notably, Chicago-owned properties like North Park Village and Harold Washington Library did not incur specific bed rates but still required significant operational investments [2].

Hail and possible tornado activity predicted for the area in the next couple of days as that front works it’s way east - tornadoes have hit within the Chicago city limits, so mayor BJ better have his act together on the “migrant” front.

19 million dollars for 239 people. That’s almost $80,000 a year for each one.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson needs to open his own house and the Official Chicago Mayor’s Compound to his beloved illegal aliens.

Don’t let the City PoPo get within a mile of either.
