Here on Capitol Hill, Hunter Biden defends himself from tax and gun charges.

Hunter Biden worked with Chung at the Commerce Department in the 1990s, where she was similarly found to have mishandled sensitive documents. Hunter Biden introduced Chung to his father in 2012 and was instrumental in getting Chung her White House job in his father's office. Chung kept in close contact with Hunter and even sent him valuable lists of cell phone numbers of top Democrats.

It's not known if influence-peddler Hunter escorted any of his Chinese business partners to his father's office at the Penn Biden Center. The Center's Visitor logs were deleted.

Hunter had free access to the Center. Chinese nationals, who paid influence-peddler Hunter millions of dollars, have been connected to Chinese military intelligence. One of them, Chi Ping “Patrick” Ho, the subject of an FBI counterintelligence investigation, later convicted of bribery, kept an office in the DC area.

Hur said his team was unable to determine exactly who may have had access to the loosely stored intelligence papers and whether they passed through foreign hands: “We cannot account for all visitors to the center.” Why? The security contractor deleted all the visitor logs for the years 2017 through 2021, he explained.

“Mr. Biden’s office did not lock,” Hur noted in his report, "and the adjoining outer office where Mr. Biden’s executive assistant Chung maintained his files was always accessible through Mr. Biden’s office.” In a footnote, Hur added that “the Vice President’s office could only be locked from the inside using a panic button."

The Penn Biden Center's Office security got even more “relaxed” in early 2019, Hur revealed, when visitors to the Penn Biden Center no longer needed a key fob or an escort to access the sixth floor of the building.

Biden’s office, filled with secret US government documents including high-level memos on China, was left virtually open to the public – including U of Penn students who took classes at the center and were allowed to work in the office space during the day.

The Biden Center is hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, which has received several million dollars from anonymous Chinese donors since opening the center. In 2020, the center hosted a symposium featuring Chinese communist officials.

While Special Counsel Robert Kyoung Hur has raised the issue of mental deterioration in explaining why he declined to prosecute 81-year-old Joe Biden for illegal retention and sharing of classified documents, the president chose another rationale to declare himself not culpable: He shifted the blame to the staffers who boxed up his records as he left the vice president’s office in 2017.

At a press conference hastily assembled after the Hur report’s release, Biden said he assumed his aides had shipped “all” the documents to the National Archives in College Park, Md. “I wish I had paid more attention to how the documents were being moved and where,” he said. “I thought they were being moved to the Archives. I thought all of it was being moved [there].”

The president’s explanation does not address how and why he shared classified material with a ghostwriter, but it shines a light on the longtime assistant who was in charge of packing his papers, Kathy Sang-ok Chung.

Chung, an old friend of Hunter Biden, who worked with Hunter at the Clinton Commerce Dept, was recommended by Hunter for a job with Joe Biden in 2012 when he was vice president.

She told investigators she oversaw the transfer of the contents of Biden’s file cabinets and desk drawers into 15 boxes when he moved out of the West Wing in January 2017.

While other office material did go to the National Archives, Hur rebuked Biden for keeping more than 600 pages of classified information – including military secrets and intelligence sources and methods – in unlocked and unauthorized containers at multiple locations, including a tattered box in the garage of Biden’s Delaware home.

The stash included information marked “top secret” involving Iran, China, Afghanistan, and Ukraine. Some of the secrets are compartmented by codewords and can only be stored and read in a secure facility known as a SCIF.

The Biden documents that Chung herself packed, unpacked, and repacked “are the most highly classified, sensitive and compartmented materials recovered during our investigation,” Hur wrote.

The 2024 Michigan Republican presidential primary and caucuses are set to be held on February 27, 2024, and March 2, 2024, as part of the Republican Party primaries for the 2024 presidential election. 55 delegates to the 2024 Republican National Convention will be allocated on a proportional and winner-take-most basis.[1] The primary will take place concurrently with its Democratic counterpart.

Background

In the 2016 Michigan Republican presidential primary, Donald Trump won with 36.5% of the vote, carrying 25 out of 59 delegates total. His closest opponents, Governor of Ohio John Kasich and Senator from Texas Ted Cruz, received 24.9% and 24.3% of the vote, respectively, with both candidates receiving 17 delegates.[2]

In February 2023, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation to move up the date of both the Democratic and Republican presidential primaries in Michigan to February 27, 2024, in line with the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) state reorganization plan.[3]

The date violated Republican Party Rule 16(c)(1), which prohibits any state/territory except Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina, from holding their primary/caucus until March 1, 2024, violating any other state/territory by stripping 80% of its delegates at the Republican National Convention.

In response, in June 2023, the Michigan Republican Party passed a resolution of intent that would allocate 16 delegates based on the results of the February 27 primary and 39 delegates based on the results of caucuses in each of the state’s 13 congressional districts on March 2.[4]

The convention held by the faction of the Michigan Republican Party recognized by the Republican National Committee led by Pete Hoekstra will be in Grand Rapids at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel on March 2,[5] while the faction of the Michigan Republican Party led by Kristina Karamo will hold their convention in Detroit at Huntington Place on the same day.[6] While media is invited to the Karamo caucus, it will be closed to the public.[7] The RNC has indicated that only the delegates from the Hoekstra-led convention will be seated for the 2024 Republican National Convention.[8]
