“Haley’s loss on Saturday marks the first time a Republican candidate has lost their home state presidential primary election in more than 50 years.”
“This quote makes literally no sense. Plenty of Republican candidates have lost their home state presidential primary.”

Perhaps terrible writing? Was the writer trying to say that no eventual presidential nominee ever failed to win their home state primary?

The writer was correct—at least for non-trivial candidates.

Even the pathetic John Kasich won his own state’s primary in 2016, for example.

I am sure Pat Paulsen probably lost his home state—a bunch of times.

:-)
