For what it’s worth the reason the KKK was powerful in the Jim Crow South was because many were members of the ‘establishment’. Robert Byrd and LBJ types... creeps.
They had power and used it - they were democrats who intimidated the black community and intimidated individual Republicans in the white community. They were effective. For decades there were NO ELECTED REPUBLICANS in the South. NONE. Doubt? Look it up.

For the press to pretend these people are a threat is an action if twisted delusion with the same purpose of the original Klan - political intimidation against Republicans and manipulation of the black community.
The same purpose of the 1920’s Indiana HQ’d Klan— to intimidate black workers, Labor organizers, Catholics, Jews and foreigners taking depleting industrial jobs in the Depression. IOW- nothing to do with the “original” klan.
