DeSantis' retail theft bill includes up to 30 years jail time for armed criminals

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has announced new legislation aimed at cracking down hard on retail theft so that crime waves seen in liberal states do not come to the Sunshine State.

DeSantis wants to keep the downward trend going, announcing on Tuesday that it will be a first-degree felony if a person commits theft with a firearm or has already had two or more prior convictions of retail theft, under his proposal. A first-degree felony in Florida is punishable by up to 30 years in prison and/or fines of up to $10,000.

His legislation will also tackle "porch piracy," the stealing of delivery packages from private properties, which will become a third-degree felony if the package is valued between $40 and $100.

This is one reason criminals prefer thieving from New York City. They'd better stay out of Florida!!!

Basically a hood idea. Though it shouldn’t be limited to retail theft. Or else the law would only divert crimals from the shops to people’s homes.

Theft is a crime of moral turpitude, no matter where it occurs. You’re correct.

Florida already has stiff penalties for burglary and home invasion. The relatively low penalties for retail theft have long been an issue with Florida’s retail merchant lobby. In the past, the Democrats and the news media derailed efforts to raise retail theft penalties by attacking them as racist because — well, we all know why.

Hmmm I hope they aren’t criminalizing non violent offenses. The trump policy and tours with those he freed from prison are important to maintain.

It’s probably cheaper to send your kid to Harvard than it is to send a criminal to prison. This is why politicians will do backflips to not prosecute, reduce charges, or simply let prisoners go, as they did in the Covid response. Either this bill hasn’t been thought through or it’s just a political stunt. (I’m a pro DeSantis guy. He’s probably the best governor we’ve had since I started following politics.)

Most likely that would make it a second or first degree felony.

But you are using a monetary guide to determine whether justice should prevail. That “yardstick” ended capital punishment and is used to open the southern border.

In Florida, residential burglary and thievery are very dangerous for the criminal.

Because he didn't know how to stay in his lane. That's why. On this, good for Ron and Florida. Go Ron!

No. Sorry, no disrespect, but that’s not the reason they don’t send criminals to prison.

A few years ago, someone in NE Florida broke into a home at night. Confronted by the homeowner, they attempted to leave and were shot, dead. The local news readers were all upset about that and confronted the sheriff. His comment was, well, just about everyone in my county has a gun. If you break into their homes, expect to get shot. That was the end of the breathless news readers story.

Great news. San Fran undocumented shoppers, don't undocument shop in Florida. We don't play games with criminals.

If you do, do it in Polk County. I'd love to hear Grady Judd at his news conference.
