FDNY HQ, homes of fire chiefs raided by FBI and NYC investigators in corruption probe

The FBI and New York City investigators raided the FDNY’s Brooklyn headquarters and the homes of some fire chiefs Thursday morning, sources confirmed to The Post.

The feds searched the homes of two top FDNY chiefs in charge of city safety inspections, according to The New York Times, which was first to report on the raids.

The probe reportedly began last summer into allegations the chiefs had each been paid $100,000 to expedite or set up inspections, the paper reported.

The chiefs, Brian Cordasco and Anthony Saccavino, have not been charged with wrongdoing.

Fire sources told The Post the two are loyalists to Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, who promoted them after she demoted three other chiefs — leading to a mutiny among the top ranks.

Decades ago, a friend of mine wanted to open a used record store in downtown D.C. He dutifully filed applications for the various required permits, including a fire inspection. After weeks passed and nothing happened, he discovered that his applications were “lost”. He was invited to reapply but was told he would now be at the bottom of the pile, and it might be months before inspections could be scheduled. That delay would cost him considerable revenue, so he asked if there was any way to expedite the process. They were waiting for that question and told him he could contact the inspectors individually to see if they would do his inspection on weekends or after hours. When he did, he found himself in a negotiation with the inspector, involving how much overtime the inspector would receive and how many assistants would be needed for the job and their rate. It was an absolute shake down.

Civil servants of any stripe living beyond their means should be investigated to determine the source of income. The clean ones (those with additional family income unrelated to their profession) should be honored and promoted. The ones with a beach house and a ski chalet but just the normal pay for their level in their profession must be made to show the source
