Surf City USA now on the front lines of Trump-era politics

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Bisecting a wide sandy beach, the Huntington Beach pier beckons tourists and surfers alike, creating a break in the waves that helps gives the city its nickname: Surf City, USA. It is a scene as laidback as the name would suggest - and a stark contrast to the political hostility spilling out of City Hall just a short drive inland.

Huntington Beach is a red city in a blue state. Even at the height of the covid restrictions and mask mandates, restaurants were full of maskless diners, and eateries were full even past the 10 PM curfew imposed by Governor Gavin Newsom.

Since May Day, 2020, when patriots gathered at the Huntington Beach pier to protest the covid lockdowns and mask mandates, the pier has been a popular site for patriots, conservatives and MAGA partisans to demonstrate.

Liberals always stick out in these pictures with their masks and constipated expressions.

“eateries were full even past the 10 PM curfew”

How dare they go out after 10 PM????!!!!

That’s when the ‘rona wakes up and starts infecting people!

It’s a nocturnal virus, don’t they know?

Such political takeovers of municipal governments are rare,

Well, not too rare.
Many (most?) municipal governments are taken over by activist lefties.
But that doesn’t count.
You know, the lefties are such nice, inclusive group!
Only MAGA are bad.

It is a shockingly expensive place.

The Bruce family got about $18 million for a modest-sized building plot as I recollect.

Yup. I have a dear friend - like a sister to me, in Huntington.

She is as conservative as the day is long.

D. Trotter is a typical leftist stooge.

Before the storms of 1982-1983 flattened the sand bars, Huntington Beach had a second, larger set of waves farther out which were very much worth paddling out for. Big waves that broke well over nice soft sand.

“Their rightward turn will face a test on March 5, when three ballot measures they promoted will go before the voters, including a proposed voter ID requirement and an effective ban on flying the LGBTQ pride flag over City Hall.”

If they are gonna allow an LGBTQ flag to fly over City Hall - then someone needs to make a “Straight & Natural” flag to put on top of city hall as well.

Investment funds, both foreign and domestic, have been buying up Orange County single family homes for at least a decade. It’s that giant pool of money that has driven SoCal prices to levels that don’t make sense by normal metrics. These funds make full cash offers often above the asking price.

My son moved to Huntington Beach, right out of college, for his first job. That was in 1999. He lived in an apartment complex right across from the beach. He’s still in CA. and says there’s no way he could afford that rent today.

Used to body surf there in the 60s. It was odd, you’d walk out into the water and it would get deeper and deeper and then it got more shallow to where the ‘fun’ waves were. Thanks for reawakening a memory for me.

The beach itself was a sea of bikini-clad teenage blondes. And back then they were girls.
