Absolutely. My understanding is that the Neocons figured it was a simple land-grab by Russia, so when Zelensky asked us whether he could negotiate a deal, the Neocons figured that Zelensky would never be offered anything he could accept, as Russia would insist on taking at least the two Donbass Republics, plus holding Crimea.
BUT, Putin didn’t want those Republics, he preferred they stay in Ukraine, as long as Ukraine agreed to stop terrorizing the residents - so Ukraine could keep all of Donbass (one part of the agreement). Crimea wasn’t even mentioned, just pushed down the road. The only other provision was keeping Ukraine out of NATO, which was also ok with Zelensky...so he signed.
...and then FULL SCALE PANIC in the West, and so Johnson had to run out there and stop the deal. So now 500,000+ dead...so yeah, if I were closing in on giving Hitler a run for his money when it came to needless deaths, I’d be defensive about it too.
