Gavin Newsom Deploys State Police For ‘Surge Operation’ To Combat Oakland Crime

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is deploying the state police to target growing crime in Oakland, California, according to a Tuesday press release.

Violent incidents rose by 21% from 2022 to 2023 with robberies and burglaries jumping 38% and 23%, respectively, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. As a result, Newsom said that 120 California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers were going to be sent to Oakland and the surrounding area to “restore a sense of safety,” according to the press release.

“As crime rates across California decrease — including right across the Bay in San Francisco — Oakland is seeing the opposite trend. What’s happening in this beautiful city and surrounding area is alarming and unacceptable. I’m sending the California Highway Patrol to assist local efforts to restore a sense of safety that the hardworking people of Oakland and the East Bay demand and deserve,” Newsom said.

A San Mateo County Sheriff officer puts up police tape at a crime scene after a shooting at the Spanish Town shops in Half Moon Bay, California, on January 24, 2023. - A suspected gunman was in custody Monday over the killing of seven people in a rural community in northern California, just two days after a mass shooting at a Lunar New Year celebration near Los Angeles.

CHP’s focus will be on “auto theft, cargo theft, retail crime, violent crime, and high-visibility traffic enforcement” and officers will use technology to read license plates to “identify and recover stolen vehicles,” according to the press release. Some of the officers will also make up specialized units such as K9 teams and “air support” and will increase police presence by 900%.

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao said that the “surge” of criminal activity in his city is “completely unacceptable” and thanked Newsom for “providing these critical law enforcement resources that are a game-changer in helping us hold more criminals accountable and make Oakland safer,” according to the press release.

The governor’s decision comes after he sent six CHP officers and a police sergeant to Oakland in August to get crime under control, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Since then the additional police presence resulted in the arrests of 100 people and the recovery of almost 200 stolen cars last year.

In November, Newsom argued during a debate with Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis that California was doing better on violent crime than Florida. However, FBI data revealed that the combined rates for homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault in 2022 for California were 499.5 offenses per 100,000 individuals, with the national average at 380.7 and Florida’s coming in at 258.9.

Good point.

But who exactly would he draw upon...other than the National Guard?

I think the whole deployment will collapse within five days of CHP arriving. They will realize that all arrested folks are released with zero bail, and no charges. At that point, they will stand down.

One other point, it’s a bit too late to really bring change to Oakland, and the political figures running the city...own the mess entirely.

Exactly.

Convicted Auto theft in California used to carry 1 to 10 years at San Quentin. What is it now?

One thing I failed to appreciate when I was younger about law enforcement - you’ll hear people say “there aren’t enough cops”. Well guess what? There will never be “enough” cops.

Once a critical mass of individuals is reached that are not going to “follow the law” it’s all over. The Genie does not get put back in the bottle. Every sane politician, including Demicrats used to understand this implicitly. The younger generations have been incubated with fairy dust and hopium and destructive and destabilizing ideologies.

“restore a sense of safety,”

but no doubt not restoring ACTUAL safety, which would require arresting criminals and keeping them in jail until tried, convicted and sentenced to the maximum sentence for the offence ... so, yeah, newsome, let’s install a SHOW of force against crime without ACTUAL force against crime ...

One suspects that the actual number of violent crimes is much higher than the reported figure.

More than one retired LEO has told me that under-reporting of violent (actually all) crime is well-known in many blue states and blue state cities. It might be instructive if a former Oakland PD officer would comment on this dynamic.

"CHP? What is wrong with the local police dept? Do I need to ask?"

The local PD is undermanned and it doesn't matter how many people arrest, if the Alameda County DA won't prosecute then the local PD can't keep thugs off the street. Plus, remember Oakland has its own defund the police agitators, and they are not backing down even with crime out of control.

One thing the CHP has in its favor is that with the State involved, when they make an arrest, the suspect will be held in jail and the State AG will prosecute.

What Newsom is signaling to the Oakland and Alameda prosecutors is that this is an ELECTION year and you better start throwing some thugs under the bus. After the elections are over, you can go back to being lazy incompetent slugs.
