I don’t want hear hypothetical examples that were legal items used wrongly compared to a deadly weapon given to a kid. It doesn’t work that way. Kids aren’t supposed to have deadly weapons. Period. If you don’t know that be ready to face prison

Unless under close supervision by a parent. At a gun range, for example. I believe you’ll agree with that.
A huge problem with this story is a lack of details. Did the mom say, “Here’s a loaded gun, Junior. Keep it in your room.” Or was it, “You can use this gun when you go hunting with Uncle Bob. We’ll keep it on my closet shelf in the meantime.”
Big difference. The first one is criminal. The second, stupid but not necessarily criminal.

I can remember when it was common for 15 year olds to have guns for hunting.

People are killed with hammers, bats, golf clubs, kitchen knives, etc. Should every parent that allows their kid to use these devices also get thrown in jail?
Sure, it sounds like she was neglectful in knowing her kid and his behavior, and shouldn't have given him a gun, but letting kids have guns is not in and of itself irresponsible.
