Geert Wilders' Party of Freedom (PVV), a populist-right party, finished first with 37 seats in last November's election. Negotiations with other parties to form a majority coalition (at least 76 seats) have been dragging on (which isn't unusual in the Netherlands). PVV's surge in post-election polls means that if a majority coalition isn't formed, and the country goes to a snap election, PVV will be in an even stronger position. Instead of needing both the long-ruling center-right Dutch Peoples Party (VVD) AND the new center-right New Coalition Party (NCP) to form a majority coalition, PVV would only need one of them (along with some lesser right of center parties). Other political news from Holland indicates that Wilders is negotiating positions on the environment, etc., with his potential coalition partners. So, while the process drags on (again, not unusual in Holland), a deal may be forthcoming.
