So much China’s claim HK’s free enterprise system and freedoms for least fifty years would continue. I always figured it was a lie.
Well what could we expect from a country that has for the part been all these by USA’s military and nuclear umbrella.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Hong Kong both before 1997 and after. Since about 2005 I have seen a slow change to make it more mainland Chinese, but it is still quite Western. They still have the Hong Kong Disneyland which I stay with the family when I’m there.
There are not as many westerners there as before but it’s still one of my favorite cities in the world from the time I first visited during the Vietnam Era...

It’s a stratagem used by United front work for a long time.
It exploits what the communists are doing to actually support them.
Your initial comment was non-sequitur and meant to change the subject to your agenda, which is to not care or be informed about what the chicoms are doing.
Hong Kong used to be one of my favorite cities. Spent 3 months there in ‘89 - I was supposed to go to the Beijing Language institute, but Tiananmen happened just before touch down in HK. Loved the time I spent city had so much character and life to it.
Revisited in ‘94, then post turnover in ‘04 and again in ‘13. Every time I went back after the turnover it was worse...you could see it in people’s eyes and how the city was starting to change in the way it was being maintained.
Of course it was stricter as well, but the character change is what really hurt.
Anyone with a brain knew that once the Chicoms obtained Hong Kong, there would soon be no difference between Hong Kong and the rest of China. Tyrants are tyrannical. There was a recent, ridiculous article about the Chinese ‘economy’ and what needed to be done to fix it.
Using any Western, Free Market vocabulary inside a Marxist-Leninist hell hole is ridiculous. The Chicom Ruling Class proved during Covid how they can shut down and isolate whoever they please.
There is another very recent story about the continuing Chicom human organ harvesting. Chicoms, like all good commies, look upon animals and humans as commodities. I need some meat from the steer, and a liver from that person. If a Chicom Ruling Class member needs a heart-lung transplant, they have, literally, billions of ‘choices.’
Well as somebody who has been there many times since the 60’s I certainly would not call Hong Kong a hell hole....
As another poster has observed it has defiantly changed since 97 but for me at least I still enjoy spending time there...
