US special operations forces are searching for a new extreme long-range rifle for their next big fight as Ukraine shows the damage that snipers can do

Ask any soldier, and they'll tell you that there are fewer scarier things on a battlefield than an enemy sniper. The combination of the unknown with the actual danger elevates snipers to some of the most hated figures in warfare.

But snipers are force multipliers, more so when it comes to special operations. Army Rangers, Navy SEALs, Marine Raiders, and Green Berets fight in small numbers, and the snipers within their ranks play a key role. In a team of 12-16 commandos, many will be sniper-qualified, thus maximizing the firepower of the group.

US special operations forces are now looking for a new, extreme long-range rifle for their next big fight, a possible high-intensity conflict, as the war in Ukraine has shown the damage that snipers can do, the impact they can have on the battlefield.

I understand that 16 inch guns have a pretty long range.

The "sniper" weapon of the present (not even the future) is where a spotter picks out a target and someone from a distance away either drops a bomb, launches a shell, or sends in a remote drone.

Exactly what I thought

Drone flyers with firing weapons on them or bombs are a new kind of sniper. A flyper, maybe.

Yes. Not taking anything away from these guys (and girls) but they had an insanely target rich environment with basically zero ROEs imposed on them.

I bet squads are no longer carrying small mortars. It’s very unnerving watching the footage from these killer drones as they track right down into the trench with the enemy. You also see drone footage from the drone attacks upon the drone operators on and around the battlefield. I’d think an AWACS drone for the numerous drones in operation.

This is the biggest load of rubbish I’ve ever read. Military types have always known the damage snipers can do. Geez. That was until the RATS on Capistol Hill came up with the idea about an ROE that requires snipers to have a spotter on the phone with some dumbass legal bozo sitting on his ass in an office back in the U.S. who makes the decision whether the sniper is allowed to take out the scumbag or not.

Now imagine a cruise missile flying along and deploying drones the same way they deploy cluster munitions.

“Sniper could easily shoot down a drone.”

How about several drones at once ?

In Ukraine they are using commercial drones at a few hundred per drone, plus a grenade.

vs. some guy on the ground, even a super sniper, it’s just a lop sided match where super-sniper doesn’t have line of sight on the guys attacking him.
