The anti-war candidate channelling Russians’ discontent with Putin [Boris Nadezhdin]
Financial Times ^ | 28JAN2024 | Courtney Weaver and Anastasia Stognei

Russians opposed to Vladimir Putin for years have been inspired by telegenic anti-corruption campaigners willing to risk their freedom and even their lives to expose the Kremlin’s crimes.

Now, after two years of war and with most opposition figures either in jail, in exile or dead, they have been left with Boris Nadezhdin. Asked by a reporter on Wednesday whether Putin considered Nadezhdin a political threat, the president’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “We do not consider him a rival. Not at all.”

Yet political analysts said it was unlikely the Kremlin would allow Nadezhdin’s popularity to progress too far. Authorities could refuse to put him on the ballot, by deeming some of his signatures invalid, they said, or find some other means to influence him, such as the threat of prison.

Russian blogger:

“Some people in the Kremlin want to lock him up in prison.” Two important news about Nadezhdin

Firstly, our insight about Boris Nadezhdin was confirmed. We wrote back in early February that politicians would be allowed to run in parliamentary elections and even, possibly, get a seat in the State Duma. And Boris Borisovich himself confirmed: he is going to go to the State Duma. The information from our sources turned out to be accurate.

Secondly, some influential people in the Kremlin and in a number of law enforcement agencies are dissatisfied with Nadezhdin and directly propose to Vladimir Putin to “close” him - to put him in prison. “The anti-war agenda is very dangerous. After the elections, I think we will have serious purges of those who are pushing for an end to the SVO. Moreover, purges are carried out not only among the elites, but at all levels. Against this background, Nadezhdin with his slogans can be dangerous. Plus, there is a threat that he can organize serious protests, and in case of problems, people will take to the streets for him. Not for him, but for ending the SVO, but we understand everything,” a source in the AP, close to Alexei Gromov, told us.

According to another interlocutor, the president listened to the arguments of such opponents of Nadezhdin, but no decisions were made on this matter.

Nadezhdin:

The SVO [Invasion of Ukraine] has been going on for two years now. People want peace.

Many thousands of people died and became disabled. Cities in which tens of thousands lived were destroyed. Millions fled their homes. For many years, normal relations with European countries, the largest trading partners since the times of the USSR, became impossible.

The military budgets of NATO countries have increased sharply. They were joined by Sweden and Finland, which did not join NATO even during the Cold War. In the UN General Assembly votes on issues related to the conflict in Ukraine, only a few countries with authoritarian or dictatorial regimes remained on Russia’s side, including Iran and the DPRK.

Small and unstable GDP growth is associated with an increase in orders for the military-industrial complex. The priorities of the Russian budget have finally become military and police - to the detriment of spending on education, health care, culture, infrastructure support, including housing and communal services.

Hence the degradation of civilian infrastructure, the lack of specialists in peaceful sectors of the economy, and rising prices for food and medicine. People see all this and understand better and better that these are direct consequences of the continuation of the SVO.

Therefore, more and more people, especially young people, are calling for the immediate start of peace negotiations.

Nadezhdin in the court today:

https://nadezhdin2024.ru/isk-v-verkhovniy-sud-rf

I again point out the contradictions in the actions of the Central Election Commission.
(such as) Why are the instructions that are used to verify signatures published after the CEC’s decision to refuse me?

https://t.me/BorisNadezhdin/1048

He tries to use logic against a court that changes the rules depending on whether the State can win or not. He acts as if he is not in the Soviet Union 2.0. You can definitely assume that there are some judges who think it's all wrong, but they can't do anything, just wait for Russia after Putin.

Russian blogger:
The Kremlin has three fears: what Putin's circle is saying about the presidential elections.

In mid-March, Vladimir Putin will be re-elected president again. There is no doubt that he will win the elections. However, the voting process itself is necessary to ensure the legitimacy of Vladimir Vladimirovich and increase the level of support among the population. Against the background of the death of Alexei Navalny and the withdrawal of Boris Nadezhdin from the election race, we talked with people in the Kremlin and those who ensure the elections. Combining the opinions of our interlocutors, we can state that there are three main fears in the AP.

The first fear is that the organizers will not be able to ensure a result of 87%. This is exactly the figure that appears in internal documents.

The second fear is that the election race will bring someone with an anti-war or neutral agenda into the political arena. It was for this reason that Nadezhdin was banned from being a candidate, and for the same reason Abramovich was dissuaded .

The third fear is that ordinary Russians will perceive this term as Putin's last, and will demand a lot from him. In particular, we are talking about problems in the regions, whose authorities are often distinguished by all the known “excesses on the ground.” There are fears in the AP that the movement of mobilized wives is only the first sign; then a conditional “movement of engineers’ wives” may appear, who will demand apartments or higher salaries for their husbands. It is for this reason that the election campaign is proceeding extremely quietly, and protest actions have begun to be dealt with more harshly. However, as you understand, any destabilization during a war does not benefit the state. Therefore, you need to be more careful with protests.

At the same time, in general, the Kremlin does not have any global problems, because ordinary Russians do not see an alternative to Vladimir Putin. And the year 2030, when it will be necessary to go to the sites again, is still very far away.

“All parties, except the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, have quite thoroughly understood the essence of remote electronic voting,” said the head of the Central Election Commission, Ella Pamfilova.

Let us recall that only representatives of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation consistently and reasonably oppose the use of DEG in elections. Therefore, Pamfilova’s words that the Communist Party of the Russian Federation are poorly versed in DEG sound at least strange.

Russian blogger:

Serious problems arose in the presidential elections in the new regions of Russia.

More than 25% of residents of the new regions of our country (DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions) do not want to take part in the presidential elections. This is evidenced by the results of a closed sociological study that we have at our disposal.

“In new regions there are many different fears. We don't yet know what to do with them, but they also influence reluctance to vote,” noted a representative of Sergei Kiriyenko’s team, who showed us the results of the survey.

In particular, more than 80% of those who do not want to participate in the elections fear a further deterioration of the socio-economic situation in their region. Also among the fears are the prolongation of active hostilities (mentioned by 76% of respondents ), disbelief that “Russia will change something for the better” ( 62% ), fears about a new wave of mobilization ( 51% ). They are especially afraid of mobilization in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, since “there is a threat that it will take place here thoughtlessly, following the example of the DPR and LPR in 2022, and many mobilized will die or be seriously injured.”

The election process is also influenced by the criminal activities of saboteurs in new regions. We wrote about individual cases and consequences of enemy sabotage. In general, according to the statistics provided to us by the FSB, in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, DPR and LPR over the past month, 26 people who have one way or another to do with the organization of the elections were killed or died under mysterious circumstances. “People are afraid and refuse to work in the elections,” a source in the Kremlin complained about this.

“The “waiters” who are still waiting for the Ukrainian army are also in the way; there are many of them here. I won't say what percentage, but it's a lot. We will, of course, make the necessary result. But Vladimir Vladimirovich will definitely ask how many people actually voted for him. And we don't yet know how to answer this question,” another AP source close to Kiriyenko honestly admitted.

Nadezhdin in the court:

I give the last word at the debate before the board.

What is planned in Russia on March 15-17, 2024? Elections that should protect the exercise of the rights of voters and candidates?

Or an event before which the Central Election Commission decides: “This is a good candidate, and this is a bad candidate”?

It seems to me that it would be better for the country if citizens could decide for themselves who they want to see on the ballot. Hundreds of thousands of people said they wanted to see me in it.

https://t.me/BorisNadezhdin/1088

I do not agree with the decision of the board, so I will file a supervisory complaint with the Presidium of the Supreme Court. And then we will turn to the Constitutional Court.

I’m not going to stop, I’ll fight until the end.

Nadezhdin:

Rating of Presidential Candidates

We continue to conduct sociological research, and again measured the support rating of candidates in the upcoming elections.

Here are two different results:
Among all people and among people who definitely decided that they would vote for the proposed candidates.

A sample of all citizens shows support for Putin of only 56.2%, while a sample of those who have decided on a candidate shows support of 81.6%.

At the same time, the number of undecided people from the entire sample is 31%. That's a lot.

Now it is important for me to convey to my supporters: you should definitely go to the elections and vote against the current government if you do not agree with the political course of our country!

Nadezhdin:

More than 40% of citizens followed my fight in the Supreme Court.

On average, 22.5% closely followed, 20.5% heard something. By the way, the older generation watched the trial and refusals in general more closely than younger people.

Thank you so much for continuing to follow and support. We will talk about how the appeal is progressing in the Supreme Court, we will show what we are going to the Constitutional Court with.

Obvious problems in the laws on the collection of signatures and their verification are visible not only to me and the Central Election Commission, but to all of Russia.

Nadezhdin:

Davankov’s rating is growing. More and more people decided to spoil the ballot.

The Institute of Regional Projects and Legislation completed the third sociological survey using its standard methodology. It was conducted from March 6 to 10, 1003 respondents were surveyed in 192 cities and towns of Russia.

Over the course of a week, the number of undecided voters planning to vote decreased from 30% to 20%.

Moreover, the 10% of voters who decided in the last week mainly decided to vote for Davankov (+3.5%). Kharitonov (+2%) and Slutsky (+0.8%) added slightly.

The number of people planning to spoil their ballots has increased significantly, from 1.5% to 3.1% of all voters. The number of those planning to vote for Putin practically did not increase, remaining at the level of 56% of all voters. But taking into account the increase in other candidates, Putin's final percentage of voters decreased slightly: to 73%.

A scandal is breaking out in the Kremlin. A representative of Kiriyenko’s team “voted” for Navalny in the elections.

This information was told to us by a source close to one of the deputy heads of the Presidential Administration (which one, we are not saying at the request of the interlocutor).

“It was like this. One of the representatives of Kiriyenko’s team went to the polls on Friday, crossed out Vladimir Vladimirovich on the ballot, wrote “Alexey Navalny” instead and threw the ballot into the ballot box. In the evening he got drunk and bragged about it. He said that he didn't like the SVO, that Vladimir Vladimirovich is tired. Idiot,” the source said.

He added that the culprit is not an employee of the Administration, but took part in Vladimir Putin's election campaign as a political strategist.

The interlocutor is also disappointed that the representative of Kiriyenko’s team went to the elections in person. “We were asked to vote online to support the president (who voted in exactly this format - ed.),” he added.

Kiriyenko’s team neither confirmed nor denied this information to us. But they promised to sort it out.

17MAR2024:
Too many people came to the elections.

We heard such an unexpected phrase from one of the people who is part of Sergei Kiriyenko’s close circle. He explained this by saying that the 2030 elections will have to be held entirely online , and therefore the current elections have become the final preparation for this.

“We didn't need queues at polling stations. Especially at 12:00 on Sunday (we are talking about the rally of supporters of Alexei Navalny - Ed.). The president votes online for a reason. Everything needs to be transferred to the Internet - it's easier to calculate there, and, excuse me, to ensure the desired result,” our interlocutor said. According to him, classic polling stations in schools and other administrative buildings “must die.”

“Working with people always involves risks. They (election commission employees - Ed.) are caught on camera with their minor violations. And this casts a shadow on the entire election result. And online - you voted, we counted correctly. Everyone is happy. Plus this cheaper,” said Kiriyenko’s team member.

100% or all 2,500 voters voted for Vladimir Putin at Belgorod polling station No. 1130. Moreover, they did this right on the first day of voting, March 15, before 15.00 - at that time 100% turnout was already recorded.

Let us remind you that the Central Election Commission previously hid the addresses of Belgorod precinct commissions from the website. The only thing that can be said is that commission No. 1130 is located in the Shebekinsky district, which is constantly under fire from Ukraine.

A Russian district called an election recount after someone else got more votes than Putin, reports say

An election recount is underway in one Russian district after President Vladimir Putin failed to win the vote there, according to local reports. In fact, one of Putin's political rivals in the recent presidential election was recorded as gaining 10 times as many votes, reports said.

The polling station, in the city of Barnaul, in the southern republic of Altai, counted 763 votes for Communist Party candidate Nikolai Kharitonov, compared with just 73 for Putin, independent Russian news outlet Meduza reported, citing local sources. The polling station is now undertaking a recount, after its results received considerable media attention, Meduza reported.

Officials say a data entry error led to inflated results for Kharitonov, the outlet reported.

It is interesting to read the Forum of the Communist party of Russia. This is from February 2024:

A group of citizens submitted documents to the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation containing a description of the discrepancies between the appearance of the citizen who submitted documents to the Central Election Commission and the appearance of the real V.V. Putin, and demanded an investigation into this circumstance.

https://www.kprf.org/showpost-p_1058530-postcount_12.html

and a link to a stream from Feb 2, 2024: youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecpGElmCVR8

They go to the Election Commission and demand an investigation to show whether those running for president are really who they say they are and that no one is pretending to be the candidate. They point to differences in height, voice and appearance. They also want a public examination of the DNA of Putin's children and the person pretending to be Putin. The official follows the rules and punches in the request as one should do in any bureaucratic system. Note that she has the stamp in her back pocket and also writes down the time. Everyone is polite.

A very brave thing to do. Wonder what happened to this request?
