Russia is having trouble defeating The Ukraine. Plus, they have lost a lot of manpower and equipment.

That doesn’t mean Putin isn’t crazy or desperate or just getting worse at both.
In the 1930’s Hitler was actually telegraphing what they wanted, particularly in terms of reuiniting with Austria and their grievances with Czechoslovakia and Poland (and needing living space, etc). No one (who mattered) was listening.
It’s better to be prepared and not have it happen then not be prepared and hope it doesn’t happen.
