President Biden told reporters Friday that the US-Mexico border is not secure — contradicting Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas — after endorsing “massive changes” in immigration policy.
“No, it’s not,” Biden said when asked whether the frontier was secure following remarks to a bipartisan group of mayors in the White House East Room.
During his speech, the 81-year-old Biden said he hoped for Senate negotiators to announce a compromise next week on border policy as part of a broader $106 billion supplemental spending request that would also finance military aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.
“I believe we need significant policy changes at the border, including changes in our asylum system to ensure that we have the authorities we need to control the border. I’m ready to act,” the president said.
“Now the question is for the [House] Speaker [Mike Johnson] and the House Republicans: Are they ready to act as well?” Biden added.
“They have to choose whether they want to solve a problem or keep weaponizing the issue to score political points against the president. I’m ready to solve the problem. I really am,” he added. “Massive changes, and I mean it sincerely.”
It’s unclear what asylum policy changes could be palatable to all three of the White House, Senate Democrats and House Republicans.
Current administration policy allows nearly all migrants who illegally cross the border to enter the US to await backlogged asylum proceedings, entitling them to work permits after an initial wait period.
Soon after taking office in 2021, Biden ended former President Donald Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, which required most asylum seekers to await their case rulings while remaining south of the border.

You can halt the crisis at the border under present law without the cooperation of the Republicans. You refuse to do it.
You are only trying to send billions more of our tax money to your cronies in the Ukraine and get Republicans to join in appropriating what most Americans know is another slush fund for Zelenskyy.
Or else internal polling is really bad (as in well beyond the margin of fraud) and Slow Joe has to look like he's doing something with the border or else the Orange Man will ride forth like the fifth horseman of the apocalypse in November.
He’s hearing it from his Dem constituency and he will only enforce it temporarily a few months before the election and, if he wins, he will the floodgates as a lame duck for the next 4 years. The Senate Republicans are taking the Dem bait that he would enforce some of the border if they give him Ukraine war money as part of a deal. But the House Republicans in will kill the deal knowing full well once he has his Ukraine money, he will not honor the border legislation and open the border again after the election. So now he is stuck temporarily shutting it down on his own a few months before the election to get elected and he has no Ukraine war money.

Total B.S. The laws were the same under Trump and he was able to enact policies that worked and made the border 1,000% more secrue under Biden.
Biden and the Dims intentionally created the Border crisis to then use that crisis as the “reason” for changes in the immigration laws that they want.
If the GOP falls for it (1) Biden gets the border issue off the 2024 election cycle, (2) the extra millions Biden left in will be defacto “legal”.
They’re going to discuss how to do it for the next 6 months. Mean while another 1 million or so slip on across the border.
